That's right, you heard me, Manic Pixie Dream Girls... and I'm not taking it back.
NPR has this great video and article about the women in movies who take depressed men who are at their wits end, usually a writer or nit wit, who find a muse in a beautiful yet not so deep female character.

The woman in the video picked one of my favorite, if not my favorite Katharine Hepburn movie, Bringing Up Baby. This movie is freaking amazing. Not in any other movie will you find Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn saying the word "leopard" a billion times. They're accents are AMAZING and the plot is crazy! It was during the time that both actors were into slapstick comedy and lacking their more dramatic roles (those came with age). This movie is a MUST SEE.
One of the other movies mentioned was Breakfast at Tiffany's. Truman Capote basically lived out his dreams with this story. Holly Golightly is the manic pixie dream girl here, and she is a PARTY girl. I love this character too. She's so flightly, yet has an inner sadness (though not too deep to be a downer). She doesn't even feel she has the right to name her cat... how great is that? "Cat, his name is cat." Plus Audrey Hepburn... need I say more?

I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing that there is such a character type. i suppose there are only a certain number of types of people that actors can play or writers will write.
no doubt that manic pixie dream girls are fun to watch, otherwise all of these movies wouldn't be so popular
