Idea--Ideal Drumsticks

Last night Jeff bought some ice cream for himself as well as some Drumstick cones for Adi, Byron and Me. Byron had a friend there, so he could have had one two, but I had a talk with one of the drumsticks and it was decided that I would eat 2.

Anyway... Byron made the comment "I wish chickens grew these." This, and the ice cream all over his face, made me want to do another addition to "Idea--Ideal." So here it is.

Going Green

Going like a Boeing-- green that is. (I'm borrowing the phrase from Joshua Price... hysterical!)
Isabella Rossellini's series "Green Porno" is coming out April 1st with a second season!!

I'm a huge fan of hers (I've written about it before) as well as "Green Porno." It's strange, it's green, it's Sundance, it's fun, it's perfect for my brain.

Here is a write up that the "The Green" @ SundanceChannel released:

GREEN PORNO – SEASON 2 (6 episodes on sundancechannel.com April 1)
Isabella Rossellini’s critically acclaimed short film series about the sex life of various creatures goes from land to sea with the creation of six new episodes exploring the reproductive habits of marine animals. Like the first season of “Green Porno,” this batch of films is scientifically accurate yet extremely entertaining. Produced byIsabella Rossellini, Jody Shapiro and Rick Gilbert.

I've heard through the grapevine that is the internet that the series will be about sea creatures and their mating habits. Star fish and other odd little hermaphrodites and asexual creatures! I bet Sea Horses too, she's written about those two in 2 of her books... and the other books have been pictures from modeling, so I doubt they'd show up anyway. She has a new book including the "Green Porno" series DVD! (Pre) Order her books... they're an entertaining lot.

If you haven't been reading my blog long, you hand was unable to click on the "older posts" link, or you aren't in "the know," here is a link to the "Green Porno" site at Sundancechannel.com

Network

"I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

Byron wanted to watch Network tonight, so we all did. It was really good, but lengthy. I didn't realize that the lead character... well more the crazy dude, is Peter Finch.
I like Peter Finch based on a movie I discovered while I was (and really still am) obsessed with Anne Bancroft. The film is The Pumkin Eater. It is about a woman with a quiverful of children who has an affair and marries the man. It is about the insanity that life's everyday trials and tribulations. The film deals with extra marital affairs, abortion, death, children, work, insanity, sterilization and various other relationships. It's pretty trippy, as most Pinter scripts are.

Harold Pinter passed away in 2008. He was a talented playwright and screenwriter. If you haven't read any of his plays, you should. If you can't get your hands on any of them, buy the VHS of The Pumpkin Eater and challenge your brain to accept the genius that he embodied and expelled. Also, check out a spectacular achievement in acting thanks to Anne Bancroft.

Early Bird

I've been up since 7:50-- VOLUNTARILY.
That's right! I just woke up. There were little animals all around my bed and I stretched my arms out wide and yawned. I was, of course, wearing the same gown I had worn yesterday, but non-the-less I woke up happy.

Where did the animals go? Oh--Hey guys.

24 Hours of Excitement

I had a good 24 hours of my life containing grade A drama.
#1. The water stopped working at our house.
For this I will show you my painting of an octopus that I painted today... I am proud of it.

By Alexis Monica Morrell :)

Jeff called me while I was contained on the luxury vehicle ...la autobus... with the SU Lax team (We beat Hood College 21-0... go us!). I didn't check my messages until after I called him... the message was frantic and un-informative. The talk... close to the same but more informative. He started out the conversation with
"You know how you were plunging the toilet and the shower?..."
and I said... "wait, before you tell me anything else, is it my fault?"
The answer: "No."
After more roundabout talking, I came to find that our pipes were messed up and that they had turned off the water. I would have to find a place to stay since peeing in the yard is unacceptable in our society, especially in town.

#2. Sarah and Jay put me up for the night. I watched the Oscars with them and then slept on the pull out. All was well and though I was a refugee of 412 Somerset, my camp was 5 star.

The next morning I awoke (thank God this isn't where the drama is right?). I went out to use their working toilet and Julia spotted me. The child's face lit up and she said "Yeh-eesh, you sleeping?" I told her that yes I had stayed there and that I hadn't brought a scone due to my late awakening. She was fine with that and thrilled to have me as a guest... the day was normal until...

#3. Julia was running around and being her normal self when she tripped on either the rug or her high-chair. She fell towards me and a chair. She BONKED her face against the cross bars of the chair and immediately started bleeding from her cheek. She cried like any other "owee" but when Sarah bandaged it, the cut wouldn't cease bleeding. After a little while Sarah called over the neighbor who has 4 children to analyze the gash.
After a look and a story about her 7 year old grabbing a razor blade, we belted in the car seats and fled to the immediate care center.

We waiting in a sespool of germs known as the waiting room for about an hour. Katharine was silent the whole time, but I think her actions really tell all of our general opinions of the place...
Thow up that bird Katharine.
(She didn't make a peep the entire time!)

Julia with her bloody bandaide.

We went into the doctor's office and Julia was to have stitches. She was not happy about any of the check-up/ stitches.
She flailed about like a fish out of water. The whole thing was traumatic... I think more for the rest of us than Julia. That kid can put up a fight. She's the most strong willed lady I've ever seen! I was kinda proud of that part. I feel like she'll get far in the world because she'll get shit done!
Anyway, the poor thing had to have 4 stitches. She was so good after the event. She had a lollipop and some chocolates and was fine. The drama was over. I drove up to Easton (late night) and then had a wonderful dental check-up... no cavities! :)

Today, I was a nervous nelly the whole time I was watching her! I took her out to lunch and then to get a tail (like Tigger) from Michael's craft store.

There was not a fit or any drama... we had fun and it was marvelous!
:)

Katharine Hepburn Museum

I received a nice comment the other day for my entry about Katharine Carlander and Katharine Hepburn.
The comment read:

Love your post. I wanted you to know that the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center and Theater is opening this summer (2009) in Hepburn's beloved seaside town of Old Sabrook, Connecticut.
We'd love it if you'd link to us and help us spread the word!
http://www.katharinehepburntheater.org

Ann Nyberg asked me to do a write up to help spread the word about the new Hepburn Center and after visiting the page, I feel obligated to!

If you click on the banner it takes you to the site. The website is well organized and easy to navigate. They describe the history and mission of the organization as well as the location and reasons for putting the theatre together.

You can visit the "Kate Shop" and donate to the museum. They have options for small donations of $15 or larger ones that can buy you a seat in the house.

I'd write more about the site, but you should really just visit and see for yourself. Contact them if you wish. They are amiable and will write back quickly.

Baby Katharine

Baby Katharine is spelling her name the same way good 'ole Katharine Hepburn spelled her's.
I feel the need to pay homage to the late, great actress with an opinionated summary of her life and movies.

First of all, let's talk about Katharine Anne Carlander.
Here is a little video I took of the child, by accident, today...

video

Look at her screen presence! I mean, she's obviously a star!
She's going to have to think that way if she's going to be anything like Hepburn.

Katharine Hepburn was a grad A bad ass. She wrote a book titled Me.
I mean, that title takes cojones. I read the book and now that I'm writing about it, I may just read it again. She was a crazy lady who knew what she wanted, went for it and didn't give a hoot what anyone else thought. Her family was well off and she spent a lot of time at Martha's Vineyard. Speaking of that...my sister HATES when I imitate Hepburn (generally talk about life in MV with a Massachusetts accent while shaking my head), but I don't care because it is one of my favorite accents in the world.
She starred in many films including Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and On Golden Pond. These are just a few of her movies, but they are the ones that I would like to discuss right now.

Bringing Up Baby was not a good movie for Katharine.
Though it is now considered one of the best comedies of all time and a great screwball classic, it earned 'ole Kate a reputation of being "box office poison." This film sent her trekking back to New York City and starring on the stage, which provided great success, but I will get to that in a bit.
BUB is one of my favorite movies of all time and my favorite Katharine Hepburn movie. I love that both she and Cary Grant say the word "leopard" a zillion times in the film. They both have great accents and to hear them fight over a silly kitty is fantastic. I recommend it to anyone at any age.
If you have seen Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, you may note a similarity in the golfing scene between Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett to the golfing in BUB.
Blanchett's characterization of Hepburn is dead on and she must have studied the film to realize the craftiness that Hepburn embodied, beyond the screen. Kate was known for her athleticism and if you doubt it, read her book... she'll change your worldview in a hurry.

Moving on, (as I assume Ms. Hepburn would have) now comes success. When Katharine Hepburn went to NYC, she was in a play called The Philadelphia Story.
She used some sense and bought the rights to the play in order to make some serious cash, if it were a success. Well, it turns out that she and the play did quite well during the run and the movie rights were discussed. Hepburn sold the rights and made a pretty penny off of the deal. It was her play, her movie and her big break. Though she was known, this movie sent her into stardom. She co-starred again with Cary Grant and also James Stewart. The movie is hilarious. It is well done: the acting as well as direction which was crafted by the genius, George Cukor. It is another famous "must see" that has since become a classic. I think this movie proves that Hepburn was an actress but she was also incredibly savvy, intelligent, manipulative and before her time.

When Jeff and I talk about her we always say "I liked to wear pants Howard"-- regarding her love of pantelones and distaste for wearing the traditional skirts. (If you want to know more about that, you'll have to read her book... I'm not even going to try!) She was a woman before her time.

^-- Pants

Jumping ahead to her later years...

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner was Hepburn's last film with her long-time sweetheart, Spencer Tracy.

Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn

Sidney Poitier, Katharine Houghton, Katharine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy

The movie was released in 1967 and also starred Sindey Poitier and Hepburn's niece Katharine Houghton (just another Katharine!). This movie addressed social issues including interracial marriage and marriage in general. The movie was made when 14 of the 50 states still considered interracial marriage a crime. Katharine was not afraid to push the rules, actually I'd say it was a common theme in her life. Her mother and father were involved in the women's suffrage movement as well as birth-control activism, so it was sure she'd take on an active role with acting! She never saw this movie because she felt the pain from Tracy's death (which was 17 days after they stopped shooting) was too real.

The last movie I'd like to throw at you is On Golden Pond.

Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn

If you have a grandparent who has recently passed or someone who you feel might... or just cry easily... keep the tissues handy. I made the mistake of watching this movie too close to my Pop-pop's death... balled for hours!
The movie is HILARIOUS. Katharine Hepburn co-stars with Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda. It is a film about ageism and bridging gaps to have a good life. Hepburn is in full force in this movie. She plays a woman who I assume is very like the real Kate. She skinny dips, goes for hikes, pushes people around and speaks her mind. She calls Henry Fonda's character an "old poop" which is fantastic when said in her famous shaky, Bryn Mawr accent. The only film better than this in her old age is her documentary that was released around her book release. SEE THEM!

Katharine Hepburn died in 2003... I think she just decided to stop.

Baby Katharine is following in step with the name. Granted, she is really named after her Aunt Katie who also spells the name with an "A," but I assume is takes a special something to qualify.

I HATE APPLICATIONS

I would like to state that I despise grad school applications.
For one, they are stressful beyond comparison. You have to put your soul and time into this project that is sent into space somewhere. Then you wait and wait and wait.
Then there is the whole internet based application form. I feel like they don't really know exactly what they are doing yet as far as the internet and applications are concerned. They tell you information is somewhere... it's not. They want everyone to be paperless, yet the application is impossible to fill out because it's supposed to be printed out still.
I suggest that they figure out an internet/user friendly application... then go paperless. You should never rely on a .PDF form as an internet based document that determines someone else's future.

I'm so stressed now, I can't write about baby Katherine yet... soon there will be a cute and fuzzy entry about babies.

Official Baby Name

Sarah and Jay have found a name for their child: Katharine Anne Carlander.
This makes my entry about Alice Katharine null and void.
I have to clean my room right now, but I am planning a lengthy blog in homage to Katharine Hepburn's awesomeness to rectify my blog.

Statement of Porpoise

I think the next time I apply to grad school I'm just going to send them a statement of porpoise instead of the usual statement of purpose.

I have one more application for this round and I can't wait to be done with these! I just want to move on with something!!!

Enjoy.

Jeanne Crain in the New York Times

I was reading The New York Times online and in the style section there was an article about large families.

READ THE ARTICLE

On the page that lists the articles in the section, which I'm sure will also be one of the pages in the style section (or was on Friday), there was a picture from the 1950 release of Cheaper by the Dozen.

I own this movie and love both it and the sequal Bells on Their Toes. I also enjoy the remakes with Bonnie Hunt and Steve Martin.
It stars Myrna Loy (most famous for The Thin Man series) and Jeanne Crain who is one of my favorite actresses. Jeanne was in a lot of B-movies but did a couple of major productions and is probably most famous for her role in State Fair. I like her attitude. She always plays a woman who is stuck in life and has to deal with everything around her. But Jeanne brought more, a slyness that can't be ignored.
My favorite film of her's is People Will Talk. In this film, she stars opposite Cary Grant. The film is quirky and ahead of it's time. It deals with unwanted pregnancy, scandal, suicide and socio-economic issues as well as the love affair between a student and professor...just kidding... though the professor and student fall in love, she gives a disclaimer which avoids controversy there.

I love Cary Grant and this movie is hilarious. I would recommend it to anyone seeking a good laugh and a corny love story.
Look out for Sunderson too... he's great! Oh! The "Wicked Witch of the West" is in this film too... keep you're eyes peeled!
Another person in this film is related to me: my Great-uncle Bob. He plays a violin in one of the scenes and every time he comes back east, we either watch the film or watch the film and talk about the film. I love it. This is also the only film that my Pop-pop and I ever RE-watched (he thought it a waste of time to see something too many times... one of many subjects we liked to verbally spar over... I miss it dearly).

Suffice it to say, I like that Jeanne Crain was in a picture in the Style section of the NYtimes today. :)

Cupcake Head

I was just in the shower...ooOoooOOo... not sexy, and I was thinking about how much I love my conditioner.
I use Organix and it smells like cupcakes. Let me put this into a language that might come a little closer to the dreamland that I live in...

Idea--^

Dream--^

Ideal becomes reality--^

This shampoo and conditioner make my bath time like showering in a bakery. All I can think of is cupcakes.
I would now like to share a code that is used in my friend's pool house. It once was a secret code, but has now been revealed and hopefully will someday belong in the Webster's or Oxford dictionary.

Cupcaking: Verb. To avoid one's friends due to a significant other. Involves cuddling, phone talks, dinners, fighting, meeting parents and canceling engagements with friends who have known you way longer than your gf/bf.

This phrase has been used by my former SSPP mates since the good old days.
One must be prepared for statements, upon return from cupcaking, such as: "You have sprinkles all over your face." or "Oh! What's that? Is that icing and crumbs?"
Ditching friends for love or lust hurts them temporarily and no one gets away easily in my circle.

Cupcakes are one of the best things in the world. I feel badly for anyone who has never tasted the sweet joys of sugar frosted sugar.

I just realized a downside... when your hair smells like a baking sensation and you're typing about cupcakes... it leads to craving and hunger. DAMMIT!

Have a good day! :)

New Baby

So-- after that intense blog about the baby's name... they're not sure if it will be Alice anymore. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I still vote for the name Alice Katharine, but I will await the results and let everyone know.
She is still a gorgeous little girl and here are a couple pics of the new addition.

Julia was ripe with anticipation for the arrival of her sister, but I'm not sure if she is quite set on having her around all the time. We will see!

I went to the bookstore today with no money to spend. Let me tell you, that is hard to do. I wrote down about 6 books I'd like to read, a journal I'd like to write in, and 2 magazines I must have.

I wrote them down so I can find them on Amazon for less money. That's what I have to do.

I'm going to go to bed now, this week has been exhausting!

What Kind of Garden Are You Coming From?

Daisy: What kind of a garden do you come from?
Alice: Oh, I don't come from any garden.
Daisy: Do you suppose she's a wildflower?

(CLICK ON THIS PICTURE TO SEE A KICK ASS VIDEO OF ALICE AND THE FLOWERS)

There are two ways many of my friends could take this quote.
One way-- to say I shouldn't quote Alice in Wonderland because I am not one of it's avid fans. I shouldn't desecrate this oh so holy (maybe hole-y... get it Alice falls down a hole) territory.
Another way-- We love that you quoted, now we should watch this movie.

I watched this movie when I was little and I did enjoy it. I enjoyed Alice In Wonderland the live action movie much more. The Disney Channel used to show this and it was so bad that it was GOOD.
It was one of the movies that my sister, Erin, and I used to sit and watch for hours. Another (totally cheesey) movie we'd do this to and my Grandma would allow was Anne of Green Gables. The PBS miniseries... BANGIN'!

All of this Alice talk makes me want to watch the films again. I'm sure I would like them on a
completely different level now, maybe more than one.

I am writing about Alice today* because this is the name of Sarah and Jay's baby, born today*; Alice Katherine Carlander.

I think it's a kick ass name. There are plenty of Alice's out there, but I think it's not an everyday name and it's also a definite name. I mean that it seems like a girl who likes adventure, independence, who's intelligent and a beauty.

I went with Julia and Jay to meet little Alice and Sarah. She was adorable. She looks like her big sister, but has her own aura. It was definitely an extraordinary experience going to the hospital. I was in the, coined, "happy section" of the hospital, but I couldn't overlook the strange paradoxes of life and death being so close to one another.
It was an adventure of sorts to see a newborn and my former professor/friend/employer/mentor/editor/ etc. in a very once-in-a-lifetime type of moment. I couldn't do anything but smile.
When I was waiting, however, it was a different story.
Jay and Julia went into the room to have "nuclear family" time and Julia's first meeting w/ Alice. I stayed in the hallway. I took note of the nurses, the cleaning man, the shiny floors, the kitsch paintings, the wall paper and the gargantuan building around me. I hate hospitals.
I admire the work that nurses do because they are doing something I could never do. They are there in shifts, get paid less than doctors and do more than doctors. I don't like M.D.'s. I think the professionalization of medicine has given them a feeling of hierarchy that they don't always deserve, well that and big Pharma...but that's a whole different blog.
I have only been to hospitals for good things about 5 times. This was number 5 and I need two hands to count the bad visits.
I don't like disease or death. I'm not a big fan of pregnancy...though I like babies. It all freaks me out.
I think you can be "TOO clean" and a hospital is a place that is just that. I like the ideals of saving people, just not the ideas or actions... they are gross and I don't want to go beyond that.

Idea--^

Ideal--^

All in all, today was a great day and eventful. Julia and I lived up the last day of "single child-ness" with scones, yellow pasta and Charlotte's Web. We met a new member of their family and danced to ABBA. SPEAKING OF ABBA!!!!... I said to Julia today "Julia, just wait until you can see Mama Mia!" Then sang, "Mama Mia..." to which Julia sang, "Here I go again!"

Here is a video.

video

I jumped, grabbed her into my arms and yelled "you're the smartest kid in the world!"
Yep. Just became one of those people for a hot second. The moment was glorious.

Well it appears when I hold off on the blog, I have a lot to release. Please leave some comments on how this one read. Thanks! :)

* Today is referring to 2/4/09... I finished the blog on 2/5/09

Cha-cha-cha-cha-changes

Julia is soon to have a little sister.
I got a text from her father saying simply "It's definitely on. I'll stay in touch."

I love this chapter of my life. It is constantly throwing me curve balls.
I have the best job I could have (outside of doing what I went to school for) in this "wonderful" economy into which I graduated. I get to play all day with a 2 year old who is cool as shit. I get to play lax and take Julia to run around and learn lax almost everyday. Sarah makes amazing food and they let me eat it. Dinner is always amusing and it's like a sitcom right in front of me. Now Sarah and Jay are at the hospital and I'm getting updates like that? Spectacular.

I'm very excited to be involved but not involved in this situation.
I am involved because I help take care of Julia and will continue to be around to help with both girls. I'm involved because Sarah and Jay have been incredibly hospitable and I like to give back to them as well. I am involved because Sarah has made sure I know everything about pregnancy that I could know with out actually having a child...whether I wanted to know it or not.

It's like having great seats at a concert. You can see the band, you know all the songs, you have a great time and maintain the ideals you have created of the band when you leave.
You don't have to go backstage and find out that it's real and the band is really smelly.

Ideal --^

Reality--^
I will get to see the bambino when she makes her home debut. That's pretty cool.

The whole idea of going into a hospital with 2 people and leaving with 3 still freaks me out. Big time. But thanks to being around this family for the 9 months previous, I realize that it's because you develop a relationship with someone even before you see them; whether you talk about them or not, or unless you stop it, she/he's a comin'.

Change seems to be the theme of life. It's very potent in my life right now. More potent in Julia and Jay's. Most in Sarah's.
Change is keeping everyone on their toes, it's refreshing.

I can't wait to give Julia and "baby sister" their presents!!!! :)
